Finite Element Analysis of a Knee Replacement

The stress and strain distribution of a knee replacement polyethylene bearing during a standard gait cycle can be established using Finite Element Analysis.

The loading is performed according to ISO 14243-3 mimicking the physical test performed on a displacement controlled EndoLab® knee joint simulator. The analysis provides additional information, such as reaction forces and moments acting on the knee replacement system. It can be used for worst case assessment within a family of implant sizes to optimize the number of physical tests.
